Gaining Skills and Confidence: Oliver’s Work Experience at Colourcube.

At Colourcube, we’re proud to support young people like Oliver by giving them valuable hands-on experience and insight into the creative industry. Recently, Oliver joined us for a week of work experience and made a great impression from day one!

Here’s Oliver’s own blog, where he shares what he’s been up to during his time with us:

What made you choose Colourcube for your work experience?

I chose Colourcube for my work experience because they offered the opportunity to work across different departments. I was interested in both the business side of car repairs and getting hands on experience in the workshop.

Can you share what you’ve been doing over the past week?

On Monday, I was welcomed into Colourcube and introduced to the team. Later in the day, I helped check in vehicles by taking photographs and putting in the car care kits.

On Tuesday, I spent most of the day in the workshop, shadowing Steve, a panel technician. He was working on fitting and stripping car parts and repairing dents. After lunch, I was introduced to the paint department, where Jonny showed me how to match and mix the paints. I also took progress photos of the repairs and saved them onto the computer.

On Wednesday, I was introduced to GT Motive, a system that provides 3D diagrams of cars. I learned how it’s used to generate estimates. After lunch, I continued learning about dent repair and paint mixing.

On Thursday, my first task was to take photographs of cars that were ready to leave, as well as those still being worked on. I then spent most of the day in the workshop with Steve and Mike, helping with a repair on a van.

Today, I’m writing a conclusion about my work experience at Colourcube, which will be a blog post on the Colourcube website next week.

Was there a particular highlight or achievement that you’re proud of?

My favourite part of the week was doing the dent repair and panel work with Steve. I chose this because it was something completely new to me, and Steve took the time to explain the repair. It was really interesting to see how the work is done step-by-step and to get hands on experience.

Is Colourcube a placement you’d encourage others to apply for? Why or why not?

I would recommend Colourcube to students who have an interest in cars and repairing them. It’s a great opportunity to gain hands- on experience.

How has your week at Colourcube helped you grow or learn something new?

I have gained a lot of confidence in talking to people like Steve, Jonny, Jorja, and the customers.

I’ve also learned that repairing vehicles requires a lot of effort and attention to detail. My ability to work on cars has improved because I’ve done many different tasks and learned various methods. Sometimes, you don’t realize how much detail goes into replacing something like a front bumper until you see the process.

Director Liz Mayes commented:

“It has been wonderful to offer Oliver a placement here at Colourcube. Oliver has shown great enthusiasm and a real eagerness to learn throughout the week. He’s been a fantastic addition to the team, and we wish him all the best as he continues with his studies.

We’re proud to support young people like Oliver by giving them valuable hands-on experience and insight into the industry.

We provide placements every year, but they fill up well in advance, so students should get in quick if they’re interested for next year.”
